Job Summary
The First Mate serves as the right hand to the Captain and plays a key leadership role aboard our vessels. You’ll help lead teens in hands-on sailing education, encourage spiritual growth, maintain vessel readiness, and cultivate a safe, fun, and faith-filled environment at sea.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Captain with navigation, anchoring, docking, and sail handling
- Assist in teaching students basic sailing skills, knots, and seamanship
- Lead daily routines such as sail training, galley rotations, and cleaning duties
- Encourage and guide teens during devotionals, worship, and outreach opportunities
- Monitor safety, morale, and group dynamics aboard
- Foster a spirit of teamwork, servant leadership, and joyful discipleship
- Help maintain the vessel’s cleanliness, functionality, and readiness for each passage
- Provide first response support in emergencies and participate in safety drills
Qualifications
- Strong sailing experience (formal training a plus: ASA, RYA, or similar)
- Experience working with teens in camp, youth ministry, or adventure settings
- Deep, active relationship with Jesus and a desire to disciple others
- Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and communication skills
- Physically able to handle the demands of life onboard and sailing conditions
- CPR/First Aid certified (Wilderness First Aid preferred)
- Clean background check and strong character references
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal sailing certifications (e.g. Day Skipper, ASA 104, etc.)
- Experience in Christian discipleship or missions
- Experience cooking, leading games, or organizing youth activities
- Familiarity with the Caribbean region
